Here, you’ll find answers to common questions about our practitioners, approach, policies, and practices.

Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that navigating healthcare can be complicated or confusing, and we’re here to provide clear, informative answers. You are always welcome to reach out to us directly with questions, but this page should provide you with the most common issues, and help steer you in the right direction.

What conditions do you treat?

We provide treatment for these and other psychiatric conditions:

Does Atara Health accept insurance?

No, we do not accept insurance. This is because the time we have to spend dealing with your insurance company and the restrictions they impose detracts us from being able to help you. Upon request, you will be provided with an itemized receipt or “Superbill” for possible reimbursement from your insurance.

Current Fees

Our current pricing plan is below:

ADHD Assessment including QbTest: $599 $499 (thru 12/31/2024)
First Visit/Initial Consultation (60-90 minutes): $299
Basic Follow-Up  (15-25 minutes): $110
Complex Follow-Up (26-45 minutes): $149
Medication Management with Psychotherapy (50-60 minutes): $199

Timeframes are approximate. Installment plans can be made available to pay outstanding balances. Click here for more details regarding pricing for these and other services.

What are your appointment hours?

Monday through Saturday: by Appointment Only
Sunday: Closed

We have flexible hours from Monday to Friday, with some limited Saturday hours, and can work with your schedule. Earliest appointments are generally 8:00am and we are open for evening appointments some days.

What area do you serve?

We see patients who are located anywhere in Virginia. We are not licensed to see patients in DC, Maryland, or any other state. If you live outside of Northern Virginia, we can still see you via telemedicine after an initial in-person visit.

Note that we abide by all current federal and state telehealth regulations.

What age range of patient do you see?

Norm treats patients from 18-64 and Mary will see patients ages 10 and up.

Can I schedule an appointment on behalf of a family member, friend, or other loved on?

Seeking psychiatric care is a very personal choice that all future patients must undertake on their own. Therefore we cannot schedule an appointment without direct contact from each adult patient. Parents of patients under age 18 can make an appointment for their children. Exceptions are made for legal guardians of adult patients who are seeking continued care for the patient.

Will my care include psychotherapy?

It depends. Mary does provide talk therapy, but Norm does not. If you are seeking specific psychotherapeutic care, we can provide you with a list of local providers.

What is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?

A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner is a Registered Nurse with extensive specialty training in psychiatry, national certification, and licensure empowering them to prescribe psychiatric medications and provide other behavioral health services.

How often will I see my provider?

After your initial intake, you will need a follow-up within thirty (or sooner) days, depending on your condition. Visit frequency depends on your response to treatment and other needs. Once you are stable, the goal is to establish a visit frequency of once every ninety days, or four times per year. Visits are generally weekly if you are receiving psychotherapy.

Do you order genomic testing (genetic testing) for psychiatric medications?

The clinical evidence for the validity and utility of genetic testing for psychiatric medications is mixed at best. If you have tried and failed multiple psychiatric medications and are consistently having poor results, a genetic test can be considered. We work with Myriad Neuroscience’s GeneSight ® product when needed.

Why ADHD Treatment Is Important

Getting formally diagnosed and treated for ADHD is crucial for several reasons.

  • A proper diagnosis can clarify the challenges a person faces, helping them understand their behavior and feelings.
  • Treatment options, including medication and therapy, can significantly improve focus, organization, and emotional regulation, leading to enhanced daily functioning.
  • Early intervention can lead to better academic and professional outcomes, reducing feelings of frustration and low self-esteem.
  • A formal diagnosis can provide access to support systems, accommodations, and resources, fostering a more positive and fulfilling life.

Ultimately, understanding and managing ADHD empowers individuals to reach their full potential.

I’ve been seeing Norm as my primary mental health provider for over ten years, and I honestly don’t think any review could do him justice. He’s exceptionally thorough, compassionate, and professional. He tracks my progress closely, remembers every detail, and always follows up — even on things I forget. He listens, takes my feedback seriously, and never dismisses even the smallest concern. What I appreciate most is how dedicated he is to staying current — always learning, keeping up with new research and medications, and seeking healthier, more effective solutions. Finding a provider who combines genuine empathy with deep knowledge and consistency is rare. I’m so grateful for his care and can’t recommend him highly enough.

Hi, as a South Asian, it is a very big deal for me to post publicly about something related to my mental health, but that is exactly why I want to. We all have very real struggles and support and care which is exactly what I have received from Norm. He helped me uncover a diagnosis that provided me so much insight and healing into something I have struggled with my whole life. Norm is incredibly intelligent, compassionate, kind, and caring. I would highly recommend him to anyone seeking support of a psychiatrist beyond the 5 to 10 minutes in an appointment otherwise.

I've been seeing Norm for a little over a year and he's been great - he's helpful, supportive, and (most importantly) he's really comfortable to talk to. I've had providers in the past that I dreaded appointments with, but I actually look forward to talking to Norm. He's knowledgeable about different medications and types of treatment, but he isn't pushy about any of them which is like a breath of fresh air after having dealt with that in the past. I definitely recommend Norm Jacobowitz to anyone looking for a provider!

Mr. Jacobowitz is professional but has a sense of humor, which I appreciate. He treats me with respect and understands what I’m going through. He explains everything thoroughly and I feel like he actually cares that I get the individualized and appropriate treatment for my needs. I’m improving and feel hopeful I will continue to improve under his care.
